It seems like it was just last month when we were beginning to uncover the nursery following the winter and, here it is, July 4th is upon us.
The plants took a while to wake up but everything is romping away now. The crews have been working long hours as we try to keep up with potting, spacing, and pruning the plants.
It's been a challenging spring as the cool moist conditions have been ideal for all sorts of leaf spots. The soaking we got throughout May took the pressure of the irrigation crew. They hardly had to work any Sundays until the middle of June. But, it sure leached out a lot of fertilizer. Oh, and who invited the flea beetles in? The cottonwood leaf beetles have made an appearance this year and what voracious appetites they have.
As is the nature of this business, we're always looking a few months ahead. We are just finishing putting up shade cloth. At the same time, the remnants of last winters' poly and lath need to come off so the houses will be ready when it's time to recover, towards the end of October. That's months away, right? Well, the plastic has been ordered. And, at the rate the days are flying by, it'll seem like next month will be time to start the overwintering process all over again.
I hope you all have a good and safe 4th. I'll be looking for my long underwear. Enjoy the rest of the summer.
